I completed my Foundation Course in London at City and Guilds in 1991. I then graduated from the University of Wales in Cardiff with a BA (Hons) degree in Art and Aesthetics (first-class honours in painting). I also participated in an exchange programme at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, USA. After graduating in 1994, I worked from a studio at the Limehouse Arts Foundation in London. In 1995, I returned to the USA, continuing my work in a studio in New York City.
Back in London after a year, I began the work that was to develop into the paintings I make today. I first took a two-year part-time postgraduate course focused solely on painting, completing my MA in Fine Art at the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church College. It was at this time that I began creating still life set-ups as a means of developing my understanding of form and colour under various lighting conditions. I also began working outside, continuing with this when I moved to my own live/work studio at Trinity Buoy Wharf in 2001. The hidden spaces of the city provided an abundance of shapes, colours and changing light throughout the seasons, and were the inspiration for my series of ‘East London’ paintings.
In 2008 I went to live and work in Italy. First in Rome, then in the village of Anticoli Corrado in Lazio. Here I was able to confront the demands of stronger and more cinematic light. I moved to Austria in 2011.
I continue to work predominately in the Austrian and Italian landscapes, where my work is deeply rooted in the tradition of figurative and representational painting. The ideas and concepts that form my paintings remain completely and conceptually abstract. For me, this is where the ultimate challenge lies.
